We have recommendation from a friend so we stopped by for the traditional fish soup and it was amazing. Very big portion with reasonable price. The restaurant locatets very close to Danube river and it is an authentic Hungarian restaurant.
One minus point because they dont accept cards, only cash so it could be a bit inconvenient for tourists.

The waiters speak English, you are given a menu that includes English, and you really can't go wrong anyway! The food was good and reasonably priced, the beer was draft, and you can eat inside or out --- plus, on this hot evening, there was a mister system.
The biggest bonus for us was that, as we sat, our fellow outdoor diners were not English speakers; we heard only Hungarian, Russian, and German spoken while we were there. Delightful. We each had an appetizer/salad, a beer, a main course, and dessert. The bill came to under $30 after we had added a tip.
We would highly recommend this restaurant. It was right around the corner from the art'otel, where we stayed and would also highly recommend. After dinner, a walk through the neighborhood is delightful as you can follow the Danube or go the other direction and walk into the neighborhood park and past lovely gardens and homes.
This place was a great find and a really great way to spend our last night in this magical city.

Around the corner from our hotel one night we had Chicken Paprikash. It was very good. Both tourists and locals in restaurant. Next night stopped for goulash soup. It was delicious and remained me of a country beef vegetable soup. Yes I would go back. Not fine dining but good food. No credit cards but they take Dollars and Euro. Service efficient and pleasant.

Me and my husband dined twice at Horgasztanya Restaurant in September 2014. It is located in the Buda part of Budapest very close to the Danube. It was recommended to us by the landlady who was renting out our accommodation as the restaurant was just a few streets away.
Before we went to the restaurant we checked it on Trip Advisor and read pretty bad reviews especially about the service there. We went anyway as it was very close and we didn't want to go anywhere fancy.
They tell you right away as you enter the restaurant that you can't pay by card which is a downside probably not just for us, but we went prepared thanks to our landlady.
The restaurant is rustic style lots of wood on the walls and with a fisherman's boat and a fisherman hanging down the ceiling.
The menu contains many fish dishes, mainly sweet water fish, including many varieties of fish soup in different Hungarian styles. But you can also order non-fish dishes also from the Hungarian kitchen, we didn't.
We ordered fish soup, Balaton style and Borhely style, as a first dish. The soups came in a kettle each so the portions were huge. The fish was very well cooked and it tasted fresh. We liked both soups but the Balaton style with cat fish was our favourite.
We also ordered a second dish before we knew how large the soups were. We had the fish platter for 2 which, needless to say was huge and the fish (4 kinds of fish) was fresh and tasted very good.
We started to understand the bad reviews about the service at the end when we wanted to pay. We waited quite a long time for the check because out of 3 members of staff only one was authorised to make de check and receive the money.
We ate for a second time there a few days later. This time we ordered just one soup for the two of us and different fish dishes for each of us for the second dish (cat fish fried with mushroom sauce and cat fish fried with garlic sauce). Both dishes were very good. This time the service was a bit prompter but the same story with the check.
We payed about 13000 Ft (about 43€) the first time and 10000Ft (about 33€) the second time. Reasonable.
Overall if you are not too bothered with the waiting for bill the experience is worth the wile. The portions are huge and truly Hungarian style. The atmosphere is also authentic.
Careful with the fish bones!!!
